The journey of pregnancy can't be painless, severity can vary from one mom to the other. You already know it can be uncomfortable at times, you know there can be some constant munchies, there will be some sleepless nights, there can be some additional trips to the bathroom, and back pain during pregnancy are just a few of those various things that bringing a baby to this world will demand. But, now you have chest pain! It can be worrying, is chest pain during pregnancy a common thing? Is a normal symptom just like others? Or, is it something else you need to be careful about? Here is what you need to know!

What causes chest pain during pregnancy?

Chest pain can occur due to many reasons during pregnancy, here are some!

Stress and anxiety

Especially when this is your first pregnancy, the excitement can turn into stress and anxiety. And, this is just the beginning of physical changes, you may feel stressed or anxious, you're worried about your baby's health, family's expectations, and this list is vast. All these feelings can lead to chest pain. You can also feel:

·         Chest tightness

·         Fast breathing

·         Difficulty concentrating

·         Dizziness

Morning sickness

Early signs of pregnancy, vomiting, and nausea, morning sickness can strike at any point in time, even at night. The credit goes to spiking hormones. When morning sickness is severe, it can lead to chest pain. Acidic vomiting can continuously irritate your throat and hence, you may feel chest pain.

These conditions can lead to weight loss or dehydration.

Lung conditions

If you have any pre-existing lung conditions such as lung infection, chest cold, asthma, or allergies, the conditions can trigger during pregnancy and cause chest pain. Lung conditions can lead to chest pain at any point in pregnancy.


This actually feels like your heart is burning, acid reflux is one of the most common causes of chest pain. It occurs near the middle of your chest, and the pain can go up to your throat. Acid from the stomach flashes up, the tube that runs from the mouth down to the stomach, this leads to chest pain from heartburn.

Gas and/or indigestion

Sounds you want nobody to hear, gassiness, bloating, can cause chest pain during pregnancy. When the gas is stuck in the upper part of your stomach, the lower or upper part of your chest can feel painful. Sometimes, it is close enough to your heart and it can make you feel worried.

Treatments for chest pain during pregnancy

·         When not too high in severity, chest pain during pregnancy is generally common.

·         Use a cold compress to help relieve swelling and muscle pain.

·         Apply a warm compress or hot water bottle to help soothe muscle and rib pain.

·         Neglect other foods that can make heartburn worse. Common foods you should avoid include tomatoes, dairy, chocolate, mint, and citrus fruits.

·         Neglect spicy foods.

·         Neglect eating foods that make you gassy, like processed foods and sugary foods.

·         Drink ginger tea to help relax nausea.

·         The right bra and maternity wear that provides you with support throughout pregnancy, make sure it's not too tight so that your body can breathe.

Symptoms accompanying chest pain!

As your pregnancy progresses, your body becomes the playground for your growing baby. You can feel the effects in your stomach and lungs as your baby may push up.

·         Difficulty breathing, especially when you lay down flat!

·         Heart palpitations

·         Fast heart rate

·         Fatigue

·         Shortness of breath

·         Low blood pressure
