Dealing with restless legs syndrome during pregnancy

Bringing a new life to this world is never easy, and there is no two ways about it. People often talk about would-be-parents that they will have to stay awake throughout the night when the baby arrives. One of the common pregnancy complaints that can keep pregnant women from getting quality shut-eye is restless legs syndrome. Also known as RLS, this condition affects a third of pregnant women.

Restless legs syndrome during pregnancy

Heartburns, cramps, worries, and nervousness all of these conditions have already joined the list of things that keep a would-be-mom awake, and then comes the third trimester with a symptom called restless legs syndrome. In this condition, pregnant women notice an uncomfortable and disconcerting tingling, creeping, and crawling in their feet and legs especially when a woman tries to sleep. This condition is often accompanied by an uncontrollable urge to move feet.

When does RLS strike?

In most cases, it starts from the third trimester, and women may notice this condition more at night. Once you move your legs, the feeling often subsides, but till the moment the sensation will already wake you up.

What causes restless legs syndrome during pregnancy?

The actual cause of RLS during pregnancy is unknown, but some believe that this condition occurs due to a chemical imbalance in the brain (dopamine) that is helpful to keep muscles movement smooth and even.

Moreover, it is also believed that an increase in estrogen levels or lack of folic acid or iron can contribute to RLS.

Treating restless legs syndrome during pregnancy

Though you may have to wait until this condition goes away, still there are a few things that you can do about it.

Slow walks

This condition keeps you awake at night and fatigue can make the condition even worse. Be busy

For some women, going under the needles can prove to be helpful. And, there are some other relaxing techniques such as yoga and meditation. It is advisable to consult your doctor before you go for it.

Should you be worried?

Well, no! This is one of the conditions you may need to learn to live with and it is temporary, The symptoms should go away after a few days of delivery, it should not be a matter of concern.
